The Art of Storytelling
Let me help you in unfolding the Art of Storytelling.
Let me help you in unfolding the Art of Storytelling.
The Art of Storytelling is similar to that punchline used by a comedian on the stand-up dais. Punchline adds a wow factor to their show and a great story adds more masala to your content.
We all love to hear stories. People talk in stories and we see them as live characters. A good storyline can convert a prospect into a potential customer.
Storytelling is the heart of Content Writing. You are creating content for your audience, pointing the needle towards them and making an impact with an entertaining narrative.
People may forget your words but they can’t forget how you made them feel. Stories have that power, the writer touches the reader’s sentiments.
Yes, words are important. What matters is how you feel after reading those words.
Yes, stories are engaging and exciting. Makes our content more interesting.
But I think it has created hype among the writers. Anyone out there wants to add a story to their content.
You need to understand where you can put stories and where you can’t put them on.
In fact, in technical write-ups and specific news articles, you can’t forcefully add a story. The story is not a compulsory element to add to every write-up.
Stories create a special bond with the reader. People tend to remember any information, if presented in story form otherwise it might sound like a regular thin crust of content.
Just look at the books, movies or watch any drama they mold your thinking and behaviour. The reason behind this works because storytelling transforms abstract ideas into something we can comprehend.
Mastering the art of storytelling, you can draw readers closer to you and allow them to gain a little more knowledge about you. This leads to a relationship that is more than simply a sales pitch.
No doubt, storytelling a powerful tool but must be used appropriately. If you use your storytelling skills at right place then you can convince people to join your email list or make a purchase of products or services.
You need to know about your targeted audience. Whom do you want to reach with your storyline..?
The audience decides the tone of the write-up. The content theme, general tone all are determined by the audience you wanna reach.
If you know your audience you’re allowed to communicate with them directly. Manifest a tale of their interest in the natal tongue which would suit their taste perfectly.
If I write a blog for IT Companies I have to set my tone technically right there. If my write-up is related to travel or lifestyle blogs, on the other hand, I may incorporate engaging stories.
Why are you writing a blog or article..?
It’s obvious you are writing a blog to promote any product or service eventually. There is a purpose behind telling any story to the reader. You are not writing in vague..!
Infuse the story in a way that makes sense and it shouldn’t feel that you are selling something to the reader. Show your creativity, including a punchline to it.
The Punchline is like a Cherry on the Cake. The most awaited line of the entire story. The line could turn unexpectedly exciting or humorous to the audience.
Punchline hit during the course of storytelling is often called the Jab Line. Go ahead and use the punch in your stories, stream the audience with you.
Create a theme for the blog dedicated to your specific audience. Jot down the main points of the content.
Craft a story that is clear to you unless you have the clarity, your content can’t deliver the right output to your audience.
Ensure that your blog is well structured and organized. I regularly chalk my plan of action in the form of a small draft of the entire content. Trust me, it really works..!
Using outlines increases your writing speed as well. Initially, it might seem time-consuming but in future, you’ll love it.
Give a try to this technique..!
Give a story that meets the emotional, intellectual and aesthetic needs of your audience. Make them feel special, as per custom everyone wants to be noticed and your reader is no exception.
Write like you are writing for one person. You are having a 1:1 conversation with a reader. The Art of Storytelling is all about weaving the audience towards your story.
You may set a flow diverting towards your real-life story or experience but don’t acquire the entire plot. Your reader is more important than anyone else, and it must be reflected in your writing.
What..! I have to write stories with my voice not words..?
Wait..! Don’t be so adventurous, you attach voice notes in your articles.
Compile your story with research work, data, stats, facts & figures and other supporting elements. These elements work at the backend of the content. Your research acts as your voice.
My research behind writing this article gives strength to my words. Believe it or not, supporting elements helps me to stand out from all.
Collecting resources might be daunting but at the same time, it contributes extra weightage to my content.
At the moment, you can find tons of articles based on personal opinions or sales-oriented. They all look the same, and sound similar. Pity..! of those writers, the audience doesn’t find any uniqueness.
Merging your voice (supporting elements) is the contemporary technique of business storytelling. Engage the reader with stats or research work and fetch business from them instead of throwing a boring sales pitch to them.
Ever waited for the Climax of the story..?
You forgot about time and other work just wanted to reach the last word of the story. Reaching there makes you feel relaxed.
That tension drives you to read the last word of the piece. Might be the thrill, suspense or the conflict gaged you to read till the end.
The reader needs the motivation to stay with the story and we writers create it by using conflict, suspense or thrill. They are the necessary elements to generate a force for the reader.
Remember one thing conflict you are creating must be meaningful to the entire content of the article.
Every story is entitled to a grand closure by the way. Leave the reader in suspense or take them to a happy ending is completely the writers choice.
Leaving the reader with a big question like O Henry’s stories - the audience must be like what’s gonna happen next..? Wanted to know or read after the last word. Make them involved so much in your story they couldn’t resist reading the next part of it.
Share any message or tip with the audience and show the art of storytelling to them. The ending must contain any of these elements.
When it comes to marketing good content always impart a piece of actionable information to the audience. As in one of my articles Essential Social Media Tips for Small Business, I have incorporated some of the easy-going tips on social media that are useful to small business owners.
There is nothing called Writer’s Block. It’s being overhyped. It is not a block but a self-created doubt by the writer itself.
I can’t tell you how many times I have doubted myself and re-written a thin piece of content again and again. And after all those things I founded myself back on the initial track.
Sometimes I have a concept to work on but once I try to type, nothing goes well. I kept staring at the laptop and wasn’t able to write a single word.
Just because I give a second thought to every concept cooking there. Over the period, I managed to learn not to overanalyze a topic.
What worst can happen with me, the client might reject my work or write-up..? I have to re-write that article, that’s okay with me. Instead of wasting my time in over thinking I can re-write the article in half a less time than that.
In this short time span, I have learnt one thing that believe in yourself. Just write your heart out there. Everything will be fine. You can always go back and refine, as it’s written on the web, not on paper.
There was one problem with me, I used unnecessary words in my write-up. Okay..! I don’t restrict myself with word count but tried to cut short unwanted or irrelevant words.
My reader is too busy, I can’t bore them with my long lengthy article. It should be short, concise, to the point and most importantly relevant to the discussion.
I enjoyed sharing my experience with you today. If you learn the Art of Storytelling, it’s gonna create magic in your write-ups.
Adventure created by you will take breathe in the minds and hearts of everyone who reads it. Insert the stories in your web content in a way that it serve the business purpose too.
Storytelling has the power to set your business distinct from the competition. You have a better chance of engaging with the targeted audience and walk into a beautiful relationship with customer.
